STEPHEN HOPKINS

 

    Stephen Hopkins was born in Jamaica, and raised in England.  He began his career designing, first as

    a comic book storyboard artist and then later as a production designer for numerous commercials and

    music videos.  He then went on to direct music videos, commercials and stage plays in Australia

    between 1984 and 1989.

 

    Hopkins’ directorial film debut was the Australian feature film

    DANGEROUS GAME (1987) starring John Polson and Marcus Graham

 

    He (and cinematographer Peter Levy) used this as a calling card in Hollywood and Hopkins was

    chosen to direct

    A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 5:  THE DREAM CHILD (1989)

    PREDATOR 2 (1990) with Danny Glover and Bill Paxton

 

    He has gone on to direct

    JUDGMENT NIGHT (1993) starring Cuba Gooding Jnr and Stephen Dorff

    BLOWN AWAY (1994) with Jeff Bridges and Tommy Lee Jones

    THE GHOST AND THE DARKNESS (1996) starring Val Kilmer and Michael Douglas

    LOST IN SPACE (1998) with Gary Oldman and William Hurt (which he produced)

    UNDER SUSPICION (2000) starring Gene Hackman and Morgan Freeman, (which he produced)

    which opened at Cannes in 2000.

 

    Stephen Hopkins most recent success has been directing and co-executive producing the pilot and

    first season of the TV series

    24 (2001-2) starring Keifer Sutherland

    With ‘24’ Hopkins has been nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Dramatic Series, a DGA award for

    Outstanding Directing Achievement and 2 Emmy Awards, one for directing and one for producing.

 

    Currently Stephen has signed on to direct and produce

    TRAFFIC (2003) for television, based loosely on the controversial, Emmy-winning BBC series

    “Traffik” and in February he starts pre-production in London on

    THE LIFE AND DEATH OF PETER SELLERS starring Geoffrey Rush as the legendary Peter Sellers.
