Ah... it's no wonder these outback images speak to you then! You've gone out to the desert to live. Amazing places. The longer you look, the more you see...

it's karmic.... I've been busy with settling into my new surroundings in the Sonorran Desert, and haven't been in a home for, hmmm? 28 days? Living at hotels and out of my truck until escrow closes on my home. I hope it's today, but it could be Friday, and I'll be off the laptop, and settled into the office to continue this creative journey with full force. Californiayanqui will again spout words of wisdom from his new digs and delight those with his irreverent and often mistaken views on the human hubris.

It really is true that you feel that eclipse looking at ya. It's eerie all right. How appropriate is it that Californiayanqui, one of the first people to comment on my blog, now becomes one of the last(?) ones to comment on my film? Thanks for that, Tim.

Donna May, "Great writing" from you is praise indeed! I like the way we managed to lift each other's films onto the MTA list this week (though it's also kinda sad that one review each is all it took).

Hahaha! Great Sean Connery voice- I'm sure you've already heard that many times though. Wow, that's a beautiful sight. Very cool to have it on camera and even more impressive the way the story came together. It really does look like an eye. :-) -Amy <3

I've reported her (she sends everything to me in email and posts it on my blog and on my film page) but who knows if they'll do anything. You're right- it's a 60 year old gag- you deserve better. My improv actor friends hate playing pubs, 'cos the suggestions from the audience are always about sex, and you can't do anything interesting with that. If she wasn't so pretty, I might think she liked me or something. Thank you, Dawn... um... can I have your baby?

Beautifully put, lilmdolphin. Here's an email I sent someone not long after the experience: A total eclipse is the most awe-inspiring event: once the sun's blazing disc disappears, you are standing in space, staring in at the heart of creation. You see that corona stream out, irridescent and awesomely large in a way which no photo can capture. The prominences- fountains of superhot gas in the sun's chromosphere- glow bright red round the limb of the moon, then you widen your view and that coal-black disc suddenly looks like the pupil of an eye, the corona its iris, and out of the heavens it's looking at all of us... all-seeing, all-powerful... Eye of God... Then it's over. Too soon! Now I know why eclipse chasers do it.

Oh! Well then....that being said, I guess a girl is just as good as a Sean Connery impersonation since neither makes any sense, strictly speaking, of course. Sorry for the lack of "star power" but I'll more than make up for it in personality and reverence!

Oh! I missed the "bush ballad" part (never heard of it...sorry) that had to be read by a man. I guess that explains the gravelly voice thing too. Will have to google bush ballad....learn something new everyday. Now look who's dumb.

My goodness....you are far from dumb! My answer is...I don't know (enjoying my brilliance ;-). Any suppositions would be another result or expectation. I do have some ideas. It would be an interesting experiment. My inquiry does presuppose that he is reponding to the images of the elipse with the same reverence as your photography. Perhaps I'm really thinking....what would your film be like if I had read the poem ;-D Jon missed out...I am jealous of your view of the eclipse...looking forward to my invite! I'm thinking I should get the last word here ;-)

Whoa, now you're making me feel dumb... "What would your brother's read sound like if he was less concerned about his result and more involved with the power of the poem and the images?" Jonny always thinks his older brother's work is crap on principle, so all these questions are purely hypothetical. Answering a question with a question is my universal solution whenever someone talks this intellectually, so what do you think, Dawn? "I am assuming he came with you for the eclipse...golly, who wouldn't want to?" He didn't actually: Jon considered it way too geeky a thing to do. The next eclipse to hit Australia will be in north-east Queensland, November 2012: I'll send you an invite!

I listened to this again and I am not sure why you demand the gravelly old bush poet...perhaps its an Aussie thing ;-) But what I am curious about is this: What would your brother's read sound like if he was less concerned about his result and more involved with the power of the poem and the images. How would he read it without demand or restriction other than his reaction to the moment? What does he feel when he sees your photography and remembers that day (I am assuming he came with you for the eclipse...golly, who wouldn't want to?). How does the poetry make him feel? How would this change the feeling of your film?

Aha- an excellent question from Dawn, the actor's actor. We must have done 24 takes, Jon and I, trying to get him to sound like a gravelly old bush poet playing it straight. None of 'em worked. We needed a 60 year old's voice, not a 29 year old's. Just for a lark, I let him do one in his fake Sean Connery accent... and it all fell into place. It slowed him down, it made such words as "rocks" and "flocks" sound quite delicious, and it suddenly had the gravitas it needed. Strictly speaking, it makes no sense to have a Scotsman doing an all-Australian bush ballad, but at least it gives us star-power! I have the rock right here on my shelf. It's even more intriguing in person!

I can't believe how long its taken me to view this short! Really beautiful photography and fun poetry. I like your brother's imitation of Sean Connery....I did find myself wondering how the film would feel if he actually used his own voice and accent (this is not a criticism, just curious ;-). The rock is very intriguing. You have wonderful sensitivity and style!

Why thank you chadiwack. We're both blessed with beautiful countries to film in. Just point the camera in any direction and turn it on: "Bingo! Great shot!" Oh, and Sean Connery was performed by my brother Jon. That's his party trick.

Normally I don't particularly enjoy poetry. But your very stylish shots and mixed with melodic timing of the reading was very entertaining. Well done to whoever imitated Sean Connery, they did a great job, subtle and not over the top. You painted a great picture of the beautiful scenery in your country.

Thanks for that, Cici. You're right about the lack of close-ups. My long-time mentor tells me my avoidance of close-ups has to do with my fear of intimacy. I say it was just because I wasn't smart enough to think of it at the time.

How did you get Sean Connery's voice??? Hahahaha. Seriously, your brother sounds just like him to my American ears. You live in Australia, eh?? Hmmm... Oh yeah. A review. I thought the poetry was wonderful!!! The shots of the eclipse were amazing! The kind of images that just stick in your brain and ask for contemplation. The image of the ROCK was visually intriguing as well. There was something a bit distant about some of the other shots... Perhaps that's what you intended, but I like to see people's faces. Perhaps some close-ups of people as they react to the "eye of God" before them. Or maybe Sean Connery could show up and act out his awe... :-) (Just kidding about that part.) I guess what I'm saying is that I like even the largest of cosmic stories to be told on a personal level, so seeing more faces and eyeballs would have been cool for me, but that's just your typical "what I would have done" type review, isn't it? :-) Thanks for checking out Peri's film. I enjoy your presence on this site.

Oh…well…hell…yeah, sure…I mean, this was great…if you like things that are “cleaver” and “visually stimulating” and “originally presented” and “pretty well written” and “did I mention clever…” I mean, if you like those thing, sure, I guess this is pretty good. But, crap, I could have done this…if I lived in Australia. And knew how to write good poetry. And could do a Sean Connery impersonation. And knew how to focus a camera…

Interesting point about needing more silence, Anne-Sophie. You may be right. I need to learn how to shut up. Oh, that accent was my Australian brother imitating a Scotsman. hi Dave - you did a very good job here -- loved that poetic dialogue & way you structure your piece w/ that rock at beginning & end, & everything seen from its pov. very nice cinematography & love your australian accent. only thing was that there was lots of narration, would've helped maybe to have a little more silence & less talk, maybe some music, i think would've given your film more power. good luck!@ Anne-Sophie (MARKED)

This film rocks (pun intended). Cosmic subject, tightly and originally told in a Sean Connery-style brogue. Disclosure: Filmmaker is a friend but I had no involvement in this production. Also, I’ve examined the earth-bound geological star of the film, and it is a genuine, no-lump-of-clay piece of stone. Or maybe a fossilised joint. Either way, it is a pretty unique piece. Now check out my awesome genre film “Derivative” at blah blah etc…just kidding.
